Follow these steps to adjust tattoo machine spring tension with a spring tension gauge:
1.   Remove needle from tattoo machine. 2.   Place handle of spring tension gauge in right hand with the tattoo machine      in the left hand. 3.   Place the torque bar on top front end (toward nipple) of the armature bar and apply pressure on the handle until the bottom of the armature bar just slightly touches the front coil of the tattoo machine. 4.   Read the scale where the torque bar crosses the scale and this is the spring tension. 5.   Usually the correct spring tension is about 300-350 grams, but, this will vary quite a bit depending on the technique used by the tattooist.  It's best to find your own setting which will be compatible with your style of tattooing. 6.   Spring tension is increased by bending the rear spring upward and decreased by bending the rear spring down. 7.   The gap between the armature bar and rear coil can also be controlled by where the rear spring is bent.  To increase this gap; the rear spring should be bent closer to the screw that secures the spring to the frame.  To decrease this gap; the spring should be bent closer to the armature bar.
